This 30mm "direct-drive" FET driver build is specifically designed for the Convoy L6 with a 6V LED, such as an XHP50, XHP70, or MT-G2.  Of course, it may also be adapted to any other 2S input/output 27.5mm momentary build (by sanding down the driver PCB).  20 AWG silicone wires are included, pre-soldered.

The driver is flashed with firmware customized for this build with an ultra low resistance FET that gives you near-direct-drive performance (limited mostly by your battery, LED, and connections) with the ability to still use lower power levels, and utilize a temperature sensor, among other functions. The FET levels have been tuned for a reliable low moonlight mode.

The difference between this driver and the normal FET drivers is that it has been optimized for 2S+ cells and use of a momentary switch (power always connected to an external momentary switch; not a standard rear clicky switch).  With the additional of an LDO voltage regulator, the quiescent current (drain while the driver is powered, but the LED is turned off) is greatly reduced when compared to a zener mod solution.  This reduction is particularly important for momentary switch applications, where the power is always connected to the driver.

All drivers feature fast PWM (no visible flicker; little to no audible sound) and come with pre-soldered leads and stiff springs able to maintain firm contact with 2x26650 cells in the tube.

Because each driver is hand built and tested, This driver may take up to 10 business days to build, test, and ship.

D4 V2 (attiny85)

There are now two versions of the D4 V2 firmware for the Convoy L6:

  1. Standard.  In this revision, when the light is powered on by clicking the rear tailcap switch, the light defaults to the "off" position.  The tailcap simply serves as a power lockout.
  2. Turbo-On.  In this revision, when the light is powered on by clicking the rear tailcap switch, the light defaults to the "TURBO" or highest mode level.  The front momentary switch must be pressed to ramp down or turn off the light.

Besides the turn on mode difference, the two versions are the same:

  • D4 V2 Ramping.  This momentary switch firmware gives you awesome ramping control, thermal throttling, and a slew of other features.  For more information about this firmware and user interface, click here.  Source code available here.
  • Temperature Sensor Function.  This firmware utilizes the MCU's internal termpareture sensor.  The pre-set temperature point is approximately 60C, but there will be some lag time between when the body heats up and the driver heats up and cools down.

Convoy L6 Standard Electronic Switch Firmware

  • Standard FET Electronic Switch.  This option uses STAR momentary firmware, which allows you to start on either the lowest or highest mode from off with either a short tap or long press of the switch.
  • Momentary switch ONLY.  The current firmware only utilizes the front momentary switch; the rear switch only serves as a power lockout.  There is no memory.
    • Standard Mode Levels:  ML - 2% - 15% - 50% - 100% (well spaced modes).
      • The switch wires are soldered to the large and well marked "MOM. SW." pads
  • Temperature Sensor Function.  This firmware utilizes a temperature sensor which is located on the driver PCB.  The set temperature point is approximately 60C, but there will be some lag time between when the body heats up and the driver heats up and cools down.  The driver will dynamically decrease and increase the output level, up to the user set level.
  • Electronic Switch Custom Mode Levels.  Choose your own mode levels.  For this option, please enter the following information in your checkout comments:
    • 1.  Number of light levels: 1-6 (plus moonlight if desired)
    • 2.  Approximate PWM levels of each mode:  Example: (1) 2% - (2) 15% - (3) 40% - (4) - 100%
    • 3.  Temperature sensor set level.  Disabled, or any approximate range between 40C and 60C.

Standard Electronic Switch Firmware Low Voltage Protection.  At around 6V under load, the light will step down the power level.  At around 5.7V under the set point under load the light will shut off.  You can override any low voltage shut down by holding down the electronic switch button.  This system gives you ample warning and attempts to extend runtime before turning the light off.

This driver was made possible and is heavily inspired by many members of the BLF flashlight community, especially comfychair (initial concept and development), Mattaus (PCB layout and development), JonnyC (firmware), DrJones (firmware), and wight (singe-sided PCB development and advice).  If you'd like to learn more about these drivers, and participate in further development, come visit our community at budgetlightforum.com
